Government of India recently announced the list of 20 cities selected under the Smart Cities mission. These 20 cities have proposed ambitious initiatives focussed on business and industry, basic civic infrastructure, information and communication technology, governance, and other areas.
Most cities have opted for projects that involve retrofitting and enhancing existing infrastructure. Only one city, Bhopal, has proposed redevelopment as the central strategy, while four cities will use retrofitting and redevelopment strategies. Interestingly, none of these top 20 cities have proposed greenfield projects, which was the third option given by the Ministry of Urban Development.
